Looking Back, Moving Forward

Looking Back, Moving Forward

This image takes me back to my February diving trip in Raja Ampat - part of the intentional reset I needed before building Volante. A small, seasonally adjusted reminder of where this year began!

A year of building, learning, and amplifying impact through others - thank you for being on the journey with me.

Dear Reader

As the year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the last year and six months of Volante.

When I stepped away from my CEO role, I promised myself I’d give this next chapter a year — not to jump straight into something new, but to see whether building something of my own could be both purposeful and sustainable.

Those months unfolded in phases.
The first two were rest and travel — a needed reset after years of intensity.
The next three were listening, engaging, and thinking — understanding where I could genuinely add value.
Only then did I begin shaping Volante with intention: build it as a real business, stay disciplined about what I take on, and share what I’m learning openly and practically.

It hasn’t always been easy. Solopreneurship is both liberating and lonely. There’s no board, no team rhythm, no built-in feedback loop. But there is space — to think, to create, to work deeply with leaders at pivotal moments. And that’s been the most rewarding part: feeling that I can amplify impact through others. That was the goal, and it feels like I’m on that path.

As I look to 2026, I know this is the work I want to continue. I’m not closing the door to future leadership roles — never say never — but for now, Volante feels exactly right.

As I plan for next year, I’d really value your input:

What topics or formats would be most useful?
What kind of support would make the biggest difference for you or your organisation?

And mostly — thank you. To everyone who has encouraged me, trusted me with your work, offered feedback, or simply taken the time to read and share what I’ve written.

I am deeply grateful. You’ve shaped this first year more than you realise.

Wishing you a restorative break and a purposeful start to 2026.

Thanks for being part of this next chapter with me.

Warmly,
Liz

Rethinking Growth, Right-Sizing, and What Success Really Means

Rethinking Growth, Right-Sizing, and What Success Really Means Dear Reader We talk about growth a lot in the social sector. Revenue growth.Team growth.Geographic expansion.New funding secured. And it is easy to equate growth with success, because in many ways it feels like proof. Proof that the work matters. Proof that funders believe in you. Proof that momentum is on your side. When I talk about my time as a CEO, I often frame it this way too. Revenue grew. Teams expanded. We moved from one...

Delegation only works when trust exists

Delegation only works where trust exists Why frameworks help, but courage and trust do the heavy lifting Dear Reader In my last note, I wrote about clarity over consensus and the courage it takes to make the call. The next challenge leaders face is often - How do you create space for that clarity without becoming the bottleneck. For me, decision making frameworks (like RAPID) were an important turning point. At first, they felt slow. Roles had to be clarified. Responsibility named. Decisions...

Leadership is not about keeping the peace

Leadership is not about keeping the peace Why clarity and courage matter more than consensus Dear Reader When I first led a strategic planning process, I thought leadership meant bringing everyone along. Ensuring all voices were heard. Maintaining alignment and comfort. After the process ended, the project lead and I reflected and realised something important. We had spent too much time trying to build consensus. Every discussion stretched longer than it needed to. We hesitated to close...
